Information for Denied Students

Thank you for considering the University of Virginia during your college search. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer admission to all of the wonderful young adults who wish to attend UVA. In a large and competitive admission review, deny decisions are often a reflection of the strength and size of the applicant pool as opposed to a specific weakness or flaw in an applicant or application.

Like many of our peers, our deans and admission committees must now focus on reviewing the Regular Decision applications received. Therefore, we are unable to take calls from denied students during the week following the release of our early action decisions. If there are follow up questions regarding your application, you may contact our office beginning  February 4th. Please know that we can only speak with the applicant or school counselor regarding admission decisions.

Below are a few preliminary data points to help provide context for the applicant pool this year:

Early Action Application Volume: 25,126
Incoming Class Size: 3,750
Virginia Offer Rate: 43.7%
Non-Resident Offer Rate: 19.4%
Middle 50% Combined SAT of admitted students: 1390-1530
Middle 50% ACT Composite of admitted students: 32-35
94.6% of admitted students whose school reported rank were in the top decile of their senior class

Dean J’s Notes from Peabody blog is great source for information and context regarding the first-year application review.

Thank you again for applying to the University of Virginia. We wish you the very best as you complete your senior year and select a college.
