Transfer Eligibility
If you have completed or have in progress a minimum of 24 transferable semester hours of coursework and are one full year removed from high school graduation or the receipt of a high school equivalency by the time you will enter the University, you are considered a transfer applicant (AP and dual enrollment/dual credit do not count toward the 24 minimum credits).
If you are a high school or home-schooled student, you are not eligible for transfer and MUST apply as a first-year applicant, even if you are dual-enrolled and will have an associate degree by the time you earn your high school diploma.
If you already hold a bachelor's degree, you are not eligible to apply for a second undergraduate degree for any school of enrollment outside of the School of Engineering & Applied Science. The School of Engineering prioritizes candidates who have not already earned bachelor's degrees but will rarely admit individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree that is not in engineering or physics. If you already have your first bachelor's degree or equivalent, wherever that degree was conferred, you will only be eligible for Federal Direct Loans, and you will not be eligible for Pell Grants, State grants, or University funds.
No. College credits completed during your high school experience do not count toward the 24 post-secondary education transferable college credits to be considered a transfer applicant. You are eligible to apply as a first-year, if interested.
There is no universal minimum GPA for competitive admission, but successful applicants typically have strong college academic records.
Many courses from regionally accredited institutions can transfer if they are comparable to UVA coursework and completed with acceptable grades, C or higher. Transfer credit is determined by each individual school of enrollment at UVA.
After admission, each school of enrollment at UVA completes an official transfer credit evaluation.
Students may also review the undergraduate transfer credit equivalencies database of previously reviewed courses.
Yes. UVA welcomes applications from transfer students from community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities.
Yes. Students from accredited colleges and universities across the country may apply.
Yes. International students from colleges and universities across the globe may apply. English translated documents are requested for the application process.
Students are offered admission to an individual school of enrollment at UVA. Some schools of enrollment only offer one major, while others offer many. Students entering schools of enrollment with many majors will work with their Academic Advisor to declare a major.
Each school of enrollment recommends or requires specific transfer course requirements to ensure you are prepared for upper-level study.
Yes. If you have more than one year experience at another institution you may apply; however, be aware that transfer students, regardless of the number of transfer credits completed, are required to complete three years with McIntire.
Admission and Application Process
UVA offers transfer admission for the fall semester. You should submit all required application materials by March 1.
The College of Arts & Sciences offers a small number of admission offers for spring enrollment. That application and materials are due by October 1.
Both spring and fall applications open August 1.
You should apply through the Common Application and complete the Transfer Application and UVA Program Materials.

Official college transcripts can be requested either through the Common App itself; your request will have those transcripts sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admission, or you make the request directly from your institution(s) and your school will send them to UVA's Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Yes. Official homeschool transcripts are required and should show the same information as a high school transcript: years of attendance, courses, credits, grades, GPA, graduation date, and school official signature. These are sent to UVA's Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Course credit may transfer, but grades earned at previous institutions do not count toward a student's UVA GPA.
Yes. Applicants pay the Common Application Transfer Application fee unless they qualify for a fee waiver.
No. SAT and ACT scores are not required for transfer admission.
Under the University of Virginia name, there are schools of enrollment: College of Arts & Sciences, School of Architecture, Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, School of Education and Human Development, School of Engineering & Applied Science, McIntire School of Commerce, and School of Nursing. Under those schools of enrollment are majors. As a transfer student, you apply to UVA under a school of enrollment. Students are admitted to a school of enrollment, not necessarily a specific major.
No. You complete an application and the UVA Program Materials for your intended school of enrollment. If you are denied admission to your school of enrollment, you are denied admission to UVA.

Transfer admission is competitive and varies by year depending on the number of applicants and available spaces in each school of enrollment.
If you’re applying as a second-year student, we will review high school and college work. If you’re applying as third-year student, we will primarily review college courses.
We release fall transfer decisions by May 1. Spring College of Arts & Sciences transfer decisions are released by December 1.
Yes, but not for all schools of enrollment at UVA. Currently, the College of Arts & Sciences is the only school of enrollment that accepts spring transfer students, and it’s usually a small number of students.
Yes. You may submit significant academic updates, including mid-term grades or newly completed coursework, through your MyUVA Application Portal. Please upload updates as soon as available, as the review process begins immediately after the March 1 deadline.
Guaranteed Admission
The Guaranteed Admission Agreement provides eligible Virginia Community College System students with a guaranteed acceptance pathway into a particular UVA school of enrollment (not a major), if they meet all published academic and application requirements.
The Guaranteed Program Admission Agreement provides eligible students from a particular Virginia Community College System school with a guaranteed acceptance pathway into a particular UVA program (major), if they meet all published academic and application requirements.
A GAA only guarantees acceptance into a school of enrollment, not a major. A GPAA guarantees acceptance into a particular program (major) within a school of enrollment.

To qualify for Guaranteed Admission, you must attend a participating Virginia Community College and satisfy all requirements outlined in the agreement, including GPA, coursework, and degree completion requirements.
All Virginia Community College System institutions participate in UVA's Guaranteed Admission Agreement.
The required cumulative GPA is specified in the current Guaranteed Admission Agreement and varies depending on the school of enrollment.
Yes. You must complete an approved transferrable associate degree by the spring semester prior to the fall semester at UVA.
No. Only specified schools of enrollment offer guaranteed admission agreements. Admission is guaranteed to the school of enrollment, not a specific major.
No. Guaranteed admission is only available for the fall semester. However, if you apply to the College of Arts & Sciences for the spring semester and for some reason are not offered admission that term, it does not eliminate you from eligibility to use a GAA for fall admission.
Yes. You must complete the full transfer application process, including all required application components.
Yes. Guaranteed Admission Agreements are with the Virginia Community College System schools, not individual students.
No. Students can only apply under one intended pathway at a time.

Yes. Transfer students are eligible to be considered for federal, state, and institutional scholarships and grants. To be considered, you must submit both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile by the published priority dates.
Yes. Eligibility is determined using the same financial aid review process as other undergraduate students.
You should submit all financial aid forms by the published priority deadlines to maximize aid consideration.
No. You must apply for aid through UVA even if you previously received aid at another institution.
Yes. Some transfer students may be eligible for Federal Work-Study or obtain on-Grounds employment opportunities, in addition to off-Grounds job availability.
Housing
No. On-Grounds housing availability varies each year. While UVA works to accommodate as many transfer students as possible, housing is not guaranteed for transfer students.

No. Transfer students are fully incorporated into the on-Grounds student body residency halls population.
Students should submit the housing application as soon as possible after accepting their admission offer, and by the published priority deadline, June 1.
During the transfer student housing application process, students can write in a roommate request on the “special requests” page. Roommate requests must be mutual (both students must request each other). Housing will try to place students together, but it is not guaranteed.
Many transfer students successfully find off-Grounds housing in the Charlottesville area with support from UVA off-Grounds housing resources.

Yes. On-Grounds parking requires a permit. Many students rely on walking, biking, or the University Transit System (UTS). The city of Charlottesville also offers free public transportation, including the Trolley that runs between downtown Charlottesville and UVA.
Yes. All new transfer students participate in a transfer-specific orientation designed to help them transition academically and socially.
