Diversity Resources

Student Affairs
Student Affairs seeks to assist all students as they learn, grow, and develop during their time at U.Va.  They provide a multitude of services, including support and outreach to all facets of our diverse community.

Office of African American Affairs
The Office of African American Affairs (OAAA) helps the University provide a sensitive and welcoming environment for African American students.  This office oversees a nationally-acclaimed peer adviser program and a student/faculty mentoring program.

Multicultural Student Services
Multicultural Student Services (MSS) aims to promote inclusion and engagement for historically underrepresented students. MSS works to enhance the undergraduate experience through co-curricular programs and culturally relevant services that are meant to empower students in their identity, build community, and help a diverse group of students find their individual and collective voices.

LGBTQ Student Services
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Center at the University of Virginia seeks to foster the development of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, alumni, and allies. The Center is both a welcoming physical space and a programming center.

Latinx Student Center
The Center aims to provide an inclusive environment that supports the intersectional experiences, diverse cultures, and educational goals of Latinx students at the University of Virginia.

Interfaith Student Center
The mission of the Interfaith Space is to create a welcoming, comfortable, and safe space where students of diverse backgrounds and beliefs can practice their own faith and mindfulness and learn about those of others. 

Asian/ Asian Pacific American Student Services and Programs
This office seeks to provide support, assistance and advocacy to all Asian and Asian Pacific American Students through a peer advising program, Awareness Week, Heritage Month, a leadership training institute, and several cultural organizations.

Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 
The Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) provides leadership, information, consultation, coordination, and assistance to the University in an effort to embrace diversity and equity as pillars of excellence, synergize actions at all levels of the institution, and cultivate inclusiveness and mutual respect throughout the community.

Resources for Undocumented Students

The Outreach Office is here to support all prospective students--regardless of citizenship status--and we welcome all students to submit applications to the University.

Financial Resources for Undocumented Students
Though financial aid through UVA is not available to students with undocumented status, Student Financial Services (SFS) lists a number of financial resources that students can take advantage of. SFS also lists eligibility requirements for in-state undergraduate students with DACA status and undocumented students.

Higher Ed Immigration Portal
This resource provides a more comprehensive, nationwide look at data, policies, and resources about DACA and undocumented, other immigrant, and refugee students. 

General University Resources

Center for Undergraduate Excellence 
The Center for Undergraduate Excellence advises students about undergraduate research opportunities. UVA has produced 29 Truman Scholars, 49 Rhodes Scholars, and over 100 Fullbright Scholars.

Department of Student Health and Counseling and Psychological Services
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) works to provide for the mental health needs of students while they attend the University.  They provide brief therapy, group counseling, mental health education, crisis management strategies, and referrals to private practitioners when appropriate.  

International Studies Office
The International Studies Office works to make sure that every student has the opportunity to study abroad. U.Va. students have access to programs in over 60 countries and a wealth of advisers to make sure they choose the trip that is the perfect fit.

Student Disability Access Center
The Student Disability Access Center seeks to promote academic success for students with disabilities at the University and will work with students to determine eligibility and implement needed accommodations.

UVA Career Center
The University Career Center helps students search successfully for jobs and make good decisions about careers. Offering everything from etiquette classes to pre-professional advising and internship opportunities, the Center serves all degree-seeking students, regardless of major or year.

Financial Resources

As you make plans for managing the expense of college, we want to provide you with information on need-based assistance and merit scholarships. UVA is a need-based financial institution. Limited merit scholarships are available. All applicants are automatically considered for our merit awards and no separate application is required.

University of Virginia Office of Student Financial Services
The Office of Student Financial Services is dedicated to providing students, alumni, and their families with efficient, courteous, and responsible financial services, while complying with all federal, state, and University policies. The office provides financial assistance to students, many of whom might otherwise be unable to attend the University, and strives to ease their financial lives.

University of Virginia Net Price Calculator
The Net Price Calculator gives students an early indication of how much and what types of financial aid they might qualify for if the student were a college freshman attending the University of Virginia full-time in the academic year indicated.

Questbridge Scholarship Program

  • Award: The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies and personal expenses for four years.  The University is a partner with this national program that assisted high achieving low income students to see selective schools as a possibility.
  • How to apply for this award:  All interested students must apply through the national organization selection process.

University Achievement Award (for Virginians only)

  • Award: Full tuition for four years at UVA
  • Recipients: This award goes to in-state students who have developed exceptional academic merit, leadership, and citizenship. Applicants must satisfy at least two of the following requirements:
  1. Have a history of overcoming disadvantage
  2. Be a first generation college student
  3. Be a member of an underrepresented minority or ethnic group
  4. Be a member of a low income family
  5. Reside in a rural or inner-city location
  6. Have been raised in a single parent household
  • How to apply for the award:  All in-state applicants are automatically considered.  The most competitive applicants will demonstrate through Part II of our application that they have special talents, unique personal characteristics, and/or pressing needs that will assist us with our objective to recruit and retain a diverse student body.

Holland Blackburn Scholarship

  • Award: Each scholarship is renewable for four years and currently pays $40,000 per year for out-of-state students.
  • How to apply: All African American students applying to the University are automatically considered.

Walter N. Ridley Scholarship Fund

  • Award: Scholarships vary in amount, but a typical award is $12,500 per year for four years. 
  • How to apply: All African American students applying to the University are automatically considered.  There is no separate application, but candidates may be asked to participate in a selection process.  Finalists will be directly contacted by the Ridley Foundation with more information.

Jefferson Scholarships

  • Award: The Jefferson Scholarship covers tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, and personal expenses for four years.
  • How to apply: A student must be nominated by his or her high school in order to apply.  Check with the Jefferson Scholars Program to find out if your high school is eligible to submit a nomination.  A limited number will also be nominated from the general applicant pool.
